What IRCC checks

Canadian standard

Every photo, checked against the standard before you leave.

Canada’s IRCC has specific requirements for printed passport photos. We verify each one on-site — you never print at home or guess whether it passes.

  • 01Size — 50 × 70 mm (approx. 2 × 2¾ in)
  • 02Background — plain white or off-white, no patterns or shadows
  • 03Expression — neutral, mouth closed, eyes open and to camera
  • 04Glasses — IRCC (2026) accepts clear prescription glasses if your eyes are fully visible with no glare; tinted lenses & sunglasses are not
  • 05Recency — taken within the last 6 months
  • 06Print quality — no pixelation, inkjet smearing or red-eye
  • 07Ears & framing — both ears visible, head centred, no tilt

Rejected elsewhere?

Retake

Passport or PR photo rejected?

Bring the rejection notice. We regularly help clients who come to us after a passport, PR card, or immigration photo was rejected elsewhere. We read the rejection reason, check what went wrong, and — if the problem is the photo itself — reshoot it correctly.

Our standing policy: we check compliance before you leave, and if a photo-related issue causes a rejection, we retake it free.

What we check on a reshoot

  • ADimensions & crop ratio
  • BHead position & size
  • CBackground & shadows
  • DLighting & skin tone
  • EPrint quality

Frequently asked

FAQ
Q1Do I need an appointment?+
Yes — please call or text to book a slot. Same-day is often available.
Q2How long does it take?+
Most sessions take about 5 minutes start to finish.
Q3Is a digital file included?+
Yes. Every session includes a digital file plus printed photos, at no extra charge.
Q4What if I’m not sure about the required size?+
Tell us what document it’s for — passport, visa, PR or ID — and we match the specs.
Q5Do you do US, China, or other countries’ visa photos?+
Yes. We handle many countries’ passport and visa photo specifications, and keep specs on file for 20+ countries.
Q6Baby passport photos — any tips?+
We recommend babies be at least 6 months old and able to sit up on their own. Feed them right before you come — a full, happy baby makes the session much smoother. If your baby isn’t sitting steadily yet, please call us first so we can advise.
Q7What if the photo gets rejected?+
Very rare — we check compliance on-site. If a photo-related issue causes a rejection, we retake it for free. Bring the rejection notice and we’ll read the reason before reshooting.
Q8What type of printer do you use?+
A Japanese NDP dye-sublimation printer — the same technology used by professional photo labs. Prints are waterproof and colour-stable for 3+ years, with no inkjet smearing or fading. If your country’s passport office has strict print-quality requirements (Australia, for example), our prints meet those standards.
Q9Are glasses allowed in Canadian passport photos?+
The rule has changed. Through 2022, IRCC did not permit glasses in passport photos at all — they had to come off. Under IRCC’s 2026 guidance, clear prescription glasses are accepted again, as long as your eyes are fully visible with no glare or reflection on the lenses; tinted lenses and sunglasses are still not accepted. We track these updates and shoot to whichever standard applies the day you apply. Glare is the most common reason glasses photos get rejected — and it’s exactly what studio lighting solves: with our Profoto setup we photograph you with your glasses on, reflection-free, so you don’t have to take them off. If anything looks borderline, we’ll also capture a version without glasses. Either way, your photo meets the current standard.
Q10How much does a passport photo cost in Kingston?+
$30 per person (before tax). This includes the photo session, on-site compliance check, dye-sublimation print, and a digital file — no upsell, no hidden fees. Two people together save $5; families of 3 or more save 10%.
Q11Do you offer same-day passport photos in Kingston?+
Yes. Same-day appointments are usually available. Call or text (647) 685-5828 to confirm a time — most sessions take under 10 minutes door to door.
Q12Where are you? Is there parking?+
829 Woodside Dr, Kingston, ON K7P 1S9 — in the west end of Kingston. Free parking on-site. Open Mon–Fri 10am–7pm and Sat 11am–5:30pm.
Q13Do you serve areas around Kingston?+
Yes. Clients regularly come from Amherstview, Gananoque, Napanee, Bath and Odessa. If you’re coming from further away, we recommend booking in advance to guarantee your slot.
